Concept of Personal Hygiene

Personal Hygiene refers to taking care of our self.

It includes the way we keep ourselves clean by washing our hands, taking a proper bath, brushing our teeth, wearing clean clothes, and many more. People who do not maintain good personal hygiene, their body is likely to become an ideal environment for germs to grow and vulnerable to cause infections.

It is necessary to be both physically and mentally healthy. If we do not maintain hygiene we may end up spreading illness. It may also harm our interpersonal relationship, social interactions, and also our school/college and, job performances. On a social level, people may also start avoiding us, which is likely to cause isolation and loneliness.

Various Types Of Personal Hygiene

The concept of personal hygiene differs from person to person. But the following types are a few basic good habits which are important for us to follow.

  • Dental Hygiene

Good dental hygiene not only means having white teeth. It also includes cavity-free teeth and free from any gum disease. It also means free from bad breath.

According to the American Dental Association or ADA, to get a healthy mouth and smile we should brush our teeth twice a day, i.e., once before breakfast and once before bed. It is recommended to use ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste and change our toothbrush every three-four months.

  • Bathroom Hygiene

We need to wash our hands after we finish the use of the washroom. It is said to scrub our hands for 20-30 seconds with soap, be sure to clean between fingers, back of the hand, and, under the nails. Then was the hand with clean water and wipe with a dry towel. We can also use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer in absence of running water or soap.

  • Shower Hygiene

It completely depends on personal choice that how many times a day do you wish to take a shower. But it is highly important for everyone if us to take shower at once a day. It is also important to clean ourselves with soap every alternate as it removes the dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria from our body. We should also shampoo our hair and scalp at least twice a week as it protects our hair from the oil residues and also prevents hair loss.

  • Hand and Nail Hygiene

We should wash our hands with soap and clean water as the germs in our hands can enter our eyes, ears, mouth, or nose easily. We should wash our hands before we eat or handle food, after we sneeze or cough, if we handle any garbage, or after we touch any animal.

We should also trim our nails with a sanitized nail trimmer. It is good to keep it short as it prevents dirt from getting collected under it. Scrubbing underneath the nails can also be a part of hand wash.

Benefits Of Personal Hygiene

According to the CDC or Centre of Disease Control, if we do not wash regularly, we not only hold on to the viruses and bacteria but also end up spreading them likely causing communicative disease. According to research, every time we go to the washroom, or touch any surface, sneeze, cough, and prepare food, or do any such other stuff we take up potent harmful germs.

Good Health

The reason we fall sick at times may depend on simple habits such as washing hands and dressing up with clean clothes.

If you are having any scratch on your skin or any wound it may cause infection because of poor personal hygiene. Maintaining proper hygiene can also help to keep up a healthy skin pH and skin strength. Skin is the boundary to keep you away from germs and diseases. Good hygiene helps your skin to provide that protection more effectively. 

The only most important measure one can take to have good health hygiene is to wash your hand after we use the toilet and before we come into contact with any food and keep the environment clean.

Social Hygiene

Keeping ourselves clean is very important as it will make us look attractive and healthy. If we do not keep ourselves clean and presentable, people will deter from knowing us which will lead to many social disadvantages. It is impossible to shine by not maintaining proper health hygiene principles.

Therefore we must teach our children healthy habits and the benefits of personal hygiene from their small age so that they can have a healthy lifestyle throughout.

Mental Hygiene

A person can gain self-confidence and self-esteem by maintaining good health hygiene. Confidence and self-esteem are reflected by the capability to take care of ourselves and keep our self presentable.

Maintaining healthy teeth, hair, nails, and, skin is signs of a healthy and well-maintained person who is capable of taking care of him/her. This helps him/her gain self-confidence and go forward.
