It is an American classified website that was created and modeled for advertisements of categories such as job openings, housings, sales, items wanted, services, resumes, etc.

 

HISTORY:-

Craigslist emerged as an email distribution list in 1995 by the founder Craig Newmark, the U.S, San Fransisco. It took its evolution as people started to set up emails for new job openings in the area.

In 2008, Craigslist became the first classified website to support 5 other world languages- Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Portuguese.

By 2012, the website made it to 700 cities and areas of 70 countries.

The current CEO of Craigslist- Jim Buckmaster, joined in the year 2000 as the CTO . And contributed the site’s multi-city architecture, search engine, discussion forums, flagging system, self-posting process and was promoted to the post of CEO the same year.

Gigs were also added to the site in the year 2004, where people could post low and unpaid job advertisements for free and other mainstream jobs for $25 only for New York and Los Angeles.

 

FUNCTIONS:-

Craigslist sets out to make over 20 billion views per month and over 50 million unique monthly visitors in the country alone, which makes it the leading classifieds service in any medium.

It is one of the top job boards in the world with more than 2 million job listings each month.

 

 

REVENUE:-

Craigslist has its revenue through the paid job advertisements that of the selected American cities. It was more focused on helping the citizens find a job, place, find a used car, etc

The company has its revenue or annual income information under the drapes, yet some analysts or financial specialists would find varying figures throughout the years.

 

PROPRIETORSHIP:-

In 2004, the founder announced that eBay purchased 25% of his stake. Hence, the company was owned by Craig Newmark, Jim Buckmaster, and eBay (25% stake).

But by the year 2008, there was a fair dispute between the two where eBay sued Craigslist for safeguarding their 4-year investment.

Craigslist’s response was to file a counter suit against eBay to remedy ongoing harm to fair competition.

In the year 2015, eBay deprived of its stake back to Craigslist and thereby settled its litigation with the company.

1. Type the URL http:/craigslist.org into your browser.

2.Click on the link, “post to classifieds,” that is located on the upper left hand side of the screen.

3.Click on the type of post you want to place. Choices include jobs, housing, services and personals.

4.Fill in the applicable fields when you arrive at the window to describe your post. Keep your posting title concise and clear.

5.Click the “continue” button.

6.Review the mock ad for incorrect or confusing information and spelling mistakes. If you want to edit the ad, click on the “edit” button.

7.Read the terms of use. If you consent to all the terms, click on the “accept” button. If you don’t consent, click on the “decline” button.

8.Type in the correct captcha word. This step attempts to reduce spammers .

9.Check your email. Craigslist will send you an email that will enable you to publish, edit or delete your posting. Click on the “publish” button to post your ad on Craigslist.

FLAGGING AND BARTER:-

Flags help in identifying illegal and inappropriate postings.

Barter deals with the ‘for sale’ segment for the growing trade and economy.

CONTROVERSIES:-

In 2002, it was found that a disclaimer was put on for the erotic sectors to ensure if the user was above 18 years of age. But these disclaimers were constraint to gay encounter sections of the site and none was put up for other adult sections. That led to a huge controversy where the company was charged with negative stereotyping and discrimination.
